The Action Ain't Broken Yet (Josephine)

Lyrics

Well, it ain’t against the law to take a woman's pride
Ignore bloody screams
Force her in the night
But murder’s an illegal act even in self-defence
So I won’t step foot in Colorado again

And I won’t a his name, hope history forgets
I’m headed to the North I’ll live out in the sticks
I took the only job, only one that I could get
To settle down and pour a round as a dancehall Miss.

Chorus

But the action ain't broken yet
It's a double-barrelled shotgun, one bore has lead in it
The action ain’t broken yet
I’ll be selling moonshine till I’m good and dead

The poppy gripped me hard in McCarthyville
It covered up the pain
I’m living with it still
I ended up in the Warden Dan’s cabin in the woods
Used to fear the law at night
I kicked both habits good

Chorus

So if you want my arrest you'll be crossing
Flathead Fork
I’m cooking moonshine there
Order and uncork
I hear the whistles blow
Over the fork I row
Keep the needs of the northern trainmen
Topped up as they roll

I wrote this song about Josephine Doody, a woman who had stubborn perseverance in the face of misfortune.
